Stanza – Read your own PDFs as an ebook on your iPhone/iPod Touch

September 23rd, 2008

I found that I cannot really read PDFs on my iPhone when I just put them on, thought AirSharing did turn out to be a really useful tool to put files on the iPhone/iPod Touch, that the iPhone/iPod Touch can read. Unfortunately, it’s not free anymore ($6.99). Still, I have to magnify them, move them around; it’s quite a slow process to even read a page. So, I was very pleased when I found Stanza. Stanza is an ebook reader that now you can read PDF files with on your iPhone/iPod Touch (as well as a a vast amount of downloadable titles). Here’s how you can do it (if you’re on a Mac):

  1. Download and install Stanza for your iPhone/iPod Touch
  2. Download and install Stanza for your Mac
  3. Open a PDF with Stanza on your Mac
  4. Check /Tools/Enable Sharing on your file that you just opened
  5. Open Stanza on your iPhone/iPod Touch
  6. Go to Shared Books then find your file to download. Now, this file will be named “Unknown”, which you can rename on the iPhone, once you actually downloaded it:
  1. Tap the screen
  2. Click the little “i” icon in the upper right corner
  3. Type over “unknown” for title and author

This is great for studying on the iPhone/iPod Touch. I started looking for a way to read PDFs so I can read the FileMaker Training Series on my iPhone. Now I have no excuse anymore.

Great article, it’s good to find out about these possibilities!

Anyway, how do make the connection between the iPhone and the PC?
I’m just using the USB cable connection, but my iPhone is just searching and searching in the Shared Books, but cannot find anything.

    Thanks!

    Got it:
You have to connect to the same wireless network as the host computer.

    Thanks for the article again!

    Hi,
I think there is another way you can export your own documents into an ebook where you dont need to download and install Stanza software to your desktop. You can save documents in .pdp using OpenOffice writer. You then do the following.
Make your own fictionwise account (free), upload your own .pdp files, then log in to your account using itouch when you have wireless access, download your files.
I prefer not to download unnecessary software to my computer and I already have Open Office installed. I havent tried it yet, but I want to create ereaders from periodical type websites that I find difficult to read on a computer.

You can also upload them and directly download them on your ipod, just like David said. (I used this because the sharing feature on Stanza wasn’t working for me.) I searched and downloaded a free .epub book from munseys.com, and then I uploaded the .epub to bookworm.threepress.org after creating a free account. Then i went on to the site on my ipod, logged in, pressed the file i had just uploaded, and then downloaded the .epub straight into Stanza. It was extremely easy. Here are the detailed instructions:

Epub2Go.com will convert the PDF’s and e-mail a link to you for downloading directly into Stanza.
